In Germany, smart meter gateways are often located in basements or deep inside buildings. At such locations, mobile phone reception is often insufficient to reliably supply smart meter gateways. In addition, the modern metal meter cupboard significantly impairs radio reception. External smart meter antennas are used here. Which smart meter antenna for which application?

The choice of the right antenna depends on the installation situation on site. The decisive factors are the location of the meter cupboard, the distance to a window or external wall and the existing mobile phone coverage.

Adhesive antennas

Adhesive antennas are the most commonly used solution for smart meter rollouts. They are mounted directly on or next to the meter cabinet and are particularly suitable if the gateway is not far from a wall with sufficient mobile phone reception. Installation is simple and requires no drilling. MC Technologies offers adhesive antennas with FAKRA and SMA connections and cable lengths from 1.5 to 5 meters.

Wall antennas

Wall-mounted antennas are used if the meter location is in the basement and the antenna has to be mounted on an outside wall or on a higher floor. With cable lengths of up to 20 meters, they also bridge longer distances. Our wall antennas cover the LTE, 5G and 450 MHz frequency ranges.

Magnetic base antennas

Magnetic base antennas offer maximum positioning flexibility. They can be positioned without tools and moved quickly if necessary. This makes them a good choice for test installations or locations where the optimum antenna position first needs to be determined.

450 MHz antennas

MC Technologies offers special antennas for the 450 MHz frequency range. The 450 MHz network is operated by 450connect GmbH for critical infrastructure and offers particularly high building penetration. Measuring point operators who use this network require antennas with a suitable frequency range.

Frequently asked questions about smart meter antennas

Is it possible to connect an antenna to a smart meter?

Yes, an external antenna can be connected to a Smart Meter Gateway. Most gateways have a FAKRA or SMA connection for an external mobile radio antenna. In many installations, an external antenna is even necessary because the metal meter cabinet shields the gateway’s radio reception too much. MC Technologies offers smart meter antennas with suitable connectors for all common gateway manufacturers.

Which antenna is suitable for my smart meter gateway?

The appropriate antenna depends on the gateway manufacturer and the mobile radio standard used. Most smart meter gateways use a FAKRA-D connection, some models use SMA. How far away from the Smart Meter Gateway can the antenna be?

The maximum cable length depends on the cable type and the desired signal quality. Basically, the longer the cable, the higher the signal attenuation. MC Technologies offers cables from 0.5 to 20 meters in length. For distances over 5 meters, we recommend cables with lower attenuation (e.g. LL195 instead of RG174).
