How to find the right 4G antenna
LTE directional antenna
Wenn Sie eine Antenne für den dauerhaften Einsatz an einem festen Standort wie einem Wohngebäude oder Büro benötigen, ist eine LTE-Richtantenne die richtige Wahl. Thanks to its ability to bundle the signal in a targeted manner, it achieves a particularly long range. The greater the gain of the antenna, the more focused the signal – and the more precisely the antenna must be aligned with the nearest LTE transmission mast. When mounting, make sure you have as unobstructed a field of view as possible in the direction of the transmitter mast and take the time to align it precisely in order to achieve maximum reception quality.
LTE omnidirectional antenna
An LTE omnidirectional antenna is always used when mobility or fast commissioning is required – for example, for temporary installations, on the move or when the exact location of the transmitter mast is unknown. It receives and transmits evenly in all directions, so it does not require any special alignment. However, this flexibility is accompanied by a shorter range compared to directional antennas, as there is no targeted signal bundling.
The so-called MIMO technology (Multiple Input, Multiple Output) makes it possible to transmit several data streams simultaneously and thus ensures significantly higher transmission rates in the LTE network. Several antenna elements are used in parallel.
In practice, a glance at the LTE router is often enough:
- If your device has two external antenna connections, we recommend using a 2×2 MIMO antenna.
- If the router has four connections, you should ideally use a 4×4 MIMO antenna – alternatively, two 2×2 MIMO antennas can also be combined.
To put an outdoor LTE antenna into operation, it is connected to the LTE-capable end device – usually a router – using a coaxial cable. It is important to choose a cable that is compatible with both the antenna connection and the router connection. In practice, many LTE routers have SMA sockets, while external LTE antennas are usually equipped with N sockets. A suitable connection cable with N plug to SMA plug is therefore often required.
For compact, mobile devices such as the Vodafone GigaCube, which usually have TS9 connections, a so-called pigtail adapter cable is also required – in this case from SMA socket to TS9 plug.
A key point in cabling: the shorter the antenna cable, the lower the signal loss. To maximize the signal quality, you should keep the cable between the antenna and router as short as possible and adjust the router location if necessary.
